Phal - Leaf after leaf, after leaf
Default Phal - Leaf after leaf, after leaf

Hi guys,

I feel like I am bombarding you with questions !

I have a phal (one of about 5) that since repotting it has sprouted leaf after leaf, after leaf!! I think I have had 3 new leaves in about 3-4 months. So now, its sitting quite tall out of its container!

Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks!
Laila

Whatever you are doing with your Phals, keep it up! Lots of growing means a very happy and healthy plant. I don't think I've had Phals produce 3 leaves in one season, thought I don't pay much attention. The usual seems to be 1-2 leaves.

Let's hope that the next step is more than one spike! Keep your eyes peeled, I've spotted my first Phal spike of the season in my collection.

Mine started spiking weeks ago. So much for temperature differences...

I agree with the consensus here that your phal sounds happy and healthy. I only have three phals, but they have all been putting out new leaves and roots like crazy this year, which I have always taken for a good sign.

The natural temperature drop at the end of summer is more than enough to induce spikes. Phals don't need as much of a temp difference as we're led to believe. A general cooling down by a few degrees of the average 24 hour temperature is enough for many. I'm getting spikes earlier than usual this year, but summer ended early (mid august...) and the Phals spent the past 3 weeks outside (spraying against mealies) exposing them more strongly to the cooler temperatures.

Mine have been in the AC all summer. The temperature seldom varies until winter.

I have a very large phalaenopsis that is now putting out 2 spikes! It's the one with a fast growing basal keiki. It's several months early this year. Normally I start seeing spikes mid December. Hmm. Putting out leaf after leaf is great! I think the most I've gotten in a season is 2.

Thanks guys!!! Your replies are all comforting and it's grey to know she's happy.
I get new leaves on my phals loads, but this one in particular went mad!

Another little question- I bought one that had three spikes, all flowers dropped they spike didn't die and I cut them back, just above the third nodule, is it like to ever flower again from those old spikes? Is it best the just get cut right back?

Loving learning from you guys.

Thanks again!
