Rescued cattleya, when got this one it did not have any roots at all. I have managed to get it growing and had fantastic root growth. It is potted in Seramise and Leca but not S/H. Feew days ago I have noticed that green growing tips right at the end have a black spot. I will try to post pictures later. Coudl that be due to my potting media as rest of my cattleyas are in bark and they have no issues with root tips. PLease help. Shall I repot it in to organic media? after saving it from brink of death I really do not want to loose this one
Please see pictures . The root with black tip inside the pot and one hanging out side is just fine.
Hi Foxy2702, don't rush to repot. This can happen if the humidity is lower than they would like, if you didn't water soon enough or if the root tips are bumped against something. What are your growing conditions? Light, temperatures, humidity? How often are you watering, and how do you decide when to water?

Just a thought (I grow my Cattleyas in red lava rock):
Do you flush the pots well? Roots can be burned by too much fertilizer and when using Leca or other inorganic medium, the fertilizer salts can build up. Flushing the medium well to get rid of excess fertilizer will help prevent this.
Hi thank you for the reply, I water approximately 1 a week when i can see that seramise has changed colour and top layer is dry. When weather was hotter I also sprayed top layer as seramise gets very dry on top but not lower in the pot. Humidity is approximatelly 70%, day time temperature 24 night approx 19. It gets some direct light in the morning. Other cattleyas.

As for fertilizer, I did not fertilize this cattleya that much. I use distilled water to flush pots and then very low dosage of fertilizer. I think I only ever fertilised it once since potting it in seramise. It is just strange that nobother cattleya is displaying this root tip issue and she is the only one is seramise.
You posted new pictures. I think the root tip in the pot may have been damaged by contact with the medium, or with something else. It is not enough to worry about, when other roots look good.

I agree. Orchids tend to get bumped around and look rather scarred up by a few years old. I have a few that are 10 years old or so that look like old warriors. Sunburn spots, leaves snapped off, cats chewing on the edges of leaves, falls, snails, bad watering schedules, not enough light/too much light, all leave their marks. I imagine when the greenhouse door is closed they sit around and talk about their narrow escapes, and show off their scars.
