help w/ dividing my cattleya
one of my catts has a new rhisome that is about 2 inches long now. it is the 7th leaf (?) to develop on the plant. i took my sheers and sliced through the old rhisomes seperating the plant in half-ish, but not disturbing it any more that that. do i need to sprinkle cinnamon on the cut and how do i know if i sliced all the way through? AND how long until a dormant eye develops, if at all?
i was crazed and thought it a good idea at the time...now, not so much! thanks for taking the time to answer! n.

I didn't sprinkle mine with anything when I did the same. I just waited, and waited, and waited some more till eventually a new growth popped out. Hope this helps.

Same here, I didn't sprinkle with cin. I put a tag between where I cut with the date that I cut it. It took quite a while for the new growths to appear, but they will. This is another orchid situation where patience is a dirty word.

Let's see, I split the catt on 9/27/07 and I saw new growth (roots) about Dec and separated them completely then.
It's March now and I'll let you know if anything happens as far as sheathes. Still waiting!
Keep in mind that this was my first separation of a Catt.....so.....I'm green at this point. My Catt. is nice and healthy, though! Both have nice strong roots and look awesome....just not making blooms yet.

Dividing Catts
Hello There! I have been reading all the posts about dividing Catts. I guess I missed something can any of you explain exactly what you are doing? The post say that they slice through the plant part way and place a tag in the slice and wait for roots to start is that right?
Can't you split the plant apart carefully and repot? That's what I did to my Rojo LaelioCatt and both are blooming or in sheath. I learn something new everyday on OB

Hi Again, I have such a terrible time maneuvering around in the computer world. Anyway, I tried to copy and paste the site on OB, but couldn't so you can find it by doing the search up top. It's called ---The Cattleya "Cut-Divide-and Conquer" multiplier Method. ---
It's very informative and that is how I learned this method. Hope that helps.

i did some reading about the splitting and the book said that i should have done this cutting in the fall. perfect....now that it's march! as i mentioned before i have a new pseudobulb about 2 inches forming. how will that affect the oldest part of the catt? i wonder if it already focusing energy on the new growth......i guess i will just have to wait. hard, is it not? n.
