Default Species recommendations: low-med light, intermed-warm te,p

I live in a studio with separate kitchen. Currently I have orchids growing in my kitchen window, one of my windows of the main room and one of the brighter areas of the main room.

I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for orchids that might happily in some of the lower light areas in my studio.

The main room in my studio tends to be warm, but the kitchen a bit more likely at the intermediate temp range, and I have space in both rooms that would be more in the low-intermediate light range.

Thanks in advance!

Samantha

in order to give recommendations on what orchids can grow in your environment is to determine what experience you have in growing any orchid or even house plants.

Also, what do you want to grow? I see you are a member of the SF Orchid Society, you might engage in a conversation with another member who might empathize with your growing environment?

If you have enough humidity, it sounds like many of the phal. species would do well.

I've grown orchids for years, the most luck with Paphs but the only type I've really killed regularly are Phaleonopsis.

Because they are readily available in stores, Phalaenopsis are difficult to grow. Is your query to see if people may suggest other orchids besides Lady Slippers?

My recommendation is Neofinetia falcata. Go to the Vanda Alliance -- Neofinetia falcata and you will see many varieties.

Look into the jewel orchids. They are grown mainly for their foliage, but they bloom as well. They are low-light plants.

Look into Masdevallias and Pleurothallis, if you have substantial humidity in your studio. I grew both types in a dorm when I lived in San Francisco. I had a 10-gallon aquarium with a glass top as a terrarium.

There are also small Bulbophyllum species from very shady areas. They need a lot of water.

If you've killed Phals before, consider trying one more, and grow it in in large-chunk bark or in semi-hyroponics. Put the Phal in your warmer room.

I saw a picture of a jewel orchid the other day and thought "Wow, I've got to get one of those!" It looks a lot like a phal, but the leaves are really attractive.
