Wasps are voracious predators of other insects, including aphids, caterpillars, and anything else they can catch. I've watched yellow jackets systematically hunting through my yard--I think they use a grid system and divvy things up. I've learned to not poison the insects that show up very early in the spring so I can enjoy the predators a little later. I have been accused of being a bug-hugger, but I believe in just enjoying whatever wildlife I get (mostly).
