Bnfld Gilded Tower 'Mystic Maze' rebloom? Male
Default Bnfld Gilded Tower 'Mystic Maze' rebloom?

I've got a Banfieldara Gilded Tower 'Mystic Maze'. It's a recent purchase, and I just repotted it this past weekend. It had a single inflorescence with about 9 blooms that are now gone.

What is the likelihood that it will rebloom and is there anything that can be done to encourage it to rebloom.

This is an intergeneric hybrid in the Oncidium alliance. All of them are called by orchid growers, "Oncidiums." There are a lot of related genera that can be crossed.

Oncidium hybrids are considered quite easy to grow and bloom. You have an excellent chance of seeing it bloom again. A lot of these push new growths constantly, and they bloom with each new growth. Plants sold in markets are often blooming for the first time. As they get bigger the display becomes spectacular; most produce 2 flowers spikes from each new growth, and make multiple new growths at the same time, when they are a little older.

Most of them need a lot more water than Cattleyas or Phalaenopsis, especially when making new growth. They are better not drying out completely. If you don't water enough they develop a characteristic transverse pleating of new leaves.

They can be grown successfully in many media - bark, LECA, sphagnum, even very light potting soil mixes. The key is frequent watering to keep them moist, and an open medium allowing plenty of air at the roots.

Read throught the Oncidium forum here. You will see a lot of people grow this plant, and others.
