Default update on dendrobium

Just thought I would share photos from repotting the Dendrobium. It was in regular potting soil--yikes! But the roots look pretty good. The keiki is sort of falling off but I'm going to try to keep it on and see if it will grow some roots.

and that children, is why I repot as soon as I get them home.

You simply cannot trust all vendors to sell their plants in good medium.

Personally I would have potted it in a wider, shallower pot to give the roots some space to grow. There are some who say that the smaller the pot the better, but I have somehow never been able to see the sense in that.

This plant was so different (in terms of its condition) than all the other plants at the florist shop that I wondered if it was just some home-grown plant that the florist had agreed to sell. I remember you recommended a larger, shallow pot--I just can't fit wider pots on my windowsill and I don't want them to take over my kitchen counter space. Eventually I'm going to need to figure out more places I can keep orchids in my house.

I appreciate space is often a problem.

They are easy to grow, but have some peculiarities if you want them to bloom.

Edit June 15 2020:
Yamamoto Dendrobiums in Japan hybridizes and produces a great number of these plants. Their Web site formerly had excellent growing information for hobbyists. Unfortunately it is no longer there. You can still look at the varieties they grow, and maybe see one very similar to yours.

I saved the page, and summarized it in a post in this thread:
Uncertain if Dendrobium is still alive

Yamamoto now has a page showing how to force Dendrobium nobile for Christmas flowering in Japan's climate. There is a lot to learn from that page, but it is intended for growers who can artificially heat and cool their greenhouses during off seasons. Note they use coconut husk for growing medium, which many orchidists would say retains too much water for orchids. For many orchids that is correct, but this is a very thirsty orchid.
