Hello lovely orchid people,

I would love some advice. For the first time ever I've been putting my orchids outside. I have an east-facing balcony, which gets sun from about 10-1. Since I use growlights during the year, I had made the mistake of just putting them outside, thinking the lighting would be similar.... I was wrong. My poor little phals got sunburned within two days.
I brought them back inside and bought some 30% shade cloth. They are currently back outside with the shade cloth draped over the card they are on.
So my question is, what can I do in the future to better help them acclimate? Also, do you think I will be able to eventually "wean off" the shade cloth this summer?

I put all my plants out whenever temps are suitable. Even plants that will eventually get full sun start out in the shade getting no direct sun for a week. That's all most of my Phals get, other than my japonica which are then moved where they get a couple hours of early morning sun. Plants that like it brighter get moved into a brighter sitiation each week until they're getting the light I want them to.

I would not plan on giving Phals outside full mid-day sun for that length of time. They might be OK in sun if cowering between much taller plants.

I agree. In nature, most phalaenopsis are deep shade plants.

I like that word "cowering," ES. I put a few of my sun lovers out. They are in mostly the same exposure as yours. I have a thin beach umbrella set over them. They get early morning sun then it is very bright the rest of the day. I did sunburn a reed stem orchid but, they are weeds and it will recover. Gradually, very gradually move them into the sun...start with early sun From 10:00 to 2:00 is the most intense sun the of day. I never put my phals out, although I could.

I live in Tidewater, VA area and all my orchids spend the summer outside under a 65% shadecloth. My "high-lighters" sit on the top shelf of those industrial grade plastic shelving you see in garages, Lowe's, and nurseries; the phals and low lighters live on the second shelf. No issues with sunburn. Plants start bugging me to go outside when summer hits. The catts start their growth spurts. The phals start new leaves and spikes. All is right in the world.
