Black marks on flowers when they bloom
Default Black marks on flowers when they bloom

Hi everyone!

I have an orange Phal and I've noticed that when new buds start opening up they get these black marks on the back of the petals. When the flowers are in the sun it also looks like something's rubbed the petals colour off, like when a moths wings get rubbed off. This is something new and it's happening with the few newest buds.

I've attached photos! If anyone can let me know if this is some type of virus or indication the orchid is sick?

Also it had a couple leaves that were ripped and now one side of it has stated turning yellow. Not sure what to do as it's a middle leaf and it's yellowing towards the crown. I've attached a picture.

Thank you!!

in the photos where the flowers are backlit and the light is passing through the flower's parts, the lighter areas, looking as if it might be watery inside the petals/sepals, make me think there could be a fungal/bacterial infection. That could also account for the darker surface areas. I am far from knowledgeable on this subject. Wait for more responses.

EDIT:
Just noticed that you're from Canada. Cold drafts could make then plant susceptible to bacterial/fungal infections, especially the flowers while the buds are forming.

The flowers also might have been squashed or bumped. Any chance somebody knocked it over when you weren't looking, and forgot to mention it?

I'm a lot more certain about what's going on with the leaf in question than the flowers, so I'll start here.

The leaf retained physical damage of some sort. That corner of the leaf is dying back. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Even if the Phal goes completely leafless, but there are still healthy roots on it, it is still alive and can make a comeback.

Staying on the topic of leaves, but not the one you're asking about...

What happened to the plant? The leaves look like the plant took a beating! I'm wondering if estacion seca is right about it falling over at one point in time.

As for the flowers...I think it might be a fungal infection. Perhaps the fungus took the opportunity to infest the flowers through some tiny opening due to the physical damage they sustained.

Then again, it could be because of the drafts that the orchid might be experiencing as voyager had said.

Whichever one it is, it is difficult to tell which is the actual cause.
