Fort Wayne, Indiana has very cold weather--bad for tropical plants like Phalaenopsis. Generally speaking, these Phals would suffer from cold temperatures regardless of the potting media.
I do have Phals growing in sphagnum moss and other Phals growing in orchid potting mix. Because my plants grow indoors with me, the Phals in moss use less watering time than the plant's in hark. I have to soak the pots in water for 15 minutes or so. The plants in moss, I water at the kitchen sink, the moss absorbs faster and slowly releases the moisture to the plant--creating a humidity zone around the roots. Forced air heating systems produce very dry, warm air, the warmth is good but the dryness, not good. Hence the sphagnum moss.
Bark or moss, you have to adjust your behavior to provide the right culture. It would be easier to have all my Phals in the same potting media but I like the challenge.
