the roots of the orchid need to 'stick' to the mount, if the mount has a hard substance like varnich on them, the orchid roots wont stick....also, no nutrients can be absorbed by the part of root that is stuck to the mount, so you are just beating your brains out thinking of this....

marine varnish keeps the salt water out of the wood....nix that

your best bet is cypress, cedar, and some species of pine....OR, consider a clay mount! meet with a local artist and get them to creat a clay armature that can be fired in pieces!

Promise me you won't buy a kiln as your first step.

If you do buy a kiln, can you have it shipped here?

Clay would be very heavy. Mind you, a fired, unglazed piece would look amazing with the right orchid.

I'm curious. Why won't roots stick to varnish? After all, they stick like glue to plastic pots.
I thought of marine varnish, as it has to be particularly tough and long lasting.

A kiln? I'm not sure what you mean... probably a oven or similar to harden the clay?
If that's so, I haven't thought about that step.

In Spanish, horno de cerámicas.
