Default help w/ dividing my cattleya

one of my catts has a new rhisome that is about 2 inches long now. it is the 7th leaf (?) to develop on the plant. i took my sheers and sliced through the old rhisomes seperating the plant in half-ish, but not disturbing it any more that that. do i need to sprinkle cinnamon on the cut and how do i know if i sliced all the way through? AND how long until a dormant eye develops, if at all?

i was crazed and thought it a good idea at the time...now, not so much! thanks for taking the time to answer! n.
