I read some of us individually soak the mounted orchids overnight in large vases once a week in the drier months especially in North East....and in the summer when the humidity is high, hang them outdoors under shades.
Soaking potted orchid plants is weird unless you want to get rid of bugs inside the media.
I know Bonsai plants are soaked in a basin of water so not to mess with the arrangements.
Potted orchid plants need to be watered under the sink to flush out debris and old dead roots. Then let it drain.

I don't think there's nothing scientific about soaking or flushing, except not forgeting that orchid roots are not "designed" to live underwater.
By other hand, there are tons of reasons why some of us soak and others don't.
In my case, what makes me soak is to prevent water getting into the crowns of plants with unruly leaves(not only phals). I do it with some phals and catts.
I also do it with oncidiums and a stan because they need moist and I water them in my lunch hour, which exists for me to have lunch and not water plants.
So, leaving them soaking for 10 min is mostly a way to save some time than any other reason.

All the plants that I soak are growing fine.

My plants and I would all be better if I watered them more and skipped lunch.

All other things being equal, running water is ideal, since it not only flushes dead debris, it also flushes accumulated salts from fertilizer (and hard water if you have it), and perhaps most important of all, pulls air through the root zone. Clearly there are lots of approaches that do the job of hydrating the orchids, but just keep in mind the objectives - hydrate the plant, remove accumulated crud, and get some oxygen to the roots. Any practice that accomplishes those things will do the job.

Don't forget, when water comes out of the pot, after soaking, it's replaced by fresh air.
