I hope the Orchids are all OK and everyone has there power back on. Thanks Bob you have a tough job. I live out of town and we lose our power at times. I think of it as a trade off for getting to. I never call the power company as I know some one else will, why bug them. We have some back up heaters and camp lights and look at it as a camping trip.
Don't ya just love the song Wichita Lineman, Glenn Campbell. I love that song.

Wow, I hope you're all back on the grid soon. Does anyone use wood or pellet stoves for backup heat? Just curious...

I'm new here. Just made a post over in the Introductions section. I wanted to chime in here because this thread is hitting so close to home for me.
Cheddarbob14, I just want to say thank you so much to you and your coworkers -- and the thousands of out-of-state workers who came to help! I live in a part of Michigan that was heavily affected by the windstorm. Our power is still out, but I know how hard DTE is working to get things up and running, and I'm very grateful.
We have a generator for times like this, but I can't stop thinking of all the people out there who do not have any backup source of heat. It got down to 13 degrees here last night, and it's supposed to be about that cold again tonight.
Arizona Jeanie, I know quite a few people -- not orchid hobbyists, but just friends and family -- who have wood or pellet stoves. Some use them only as backups for power outages, but some of my family who live up in the northern part of my state use them as their primary heating source.

Always, always, always call, even if you have a "smart" meter that communicates the outage to the company. The more confirmed outages there are, the bigger the outage, the more priority.

Mountaineer370, welcome to the board, there is an over-abundance of knowledge and experience here, enjoy!
Thank you so much for your patience and understanding. It sucks, I know. My crew was pretty excited to get power back for a couple subdivisions today. Different story for the most part the previous 3 or 4 days. Typically when we show up, it's almost guaranteed that customers are back on before we leave, but we've been coming across so much damage that we've run out of time before being able to do so.

Oh well Bob I will let the others do it. When we have a blizzard and you can't see 10 feet in front of you these idiots go running to town. They end up in the ditch but I would rather wait as I don't even want the workers out on this road till the wind dies a bit. Theirs nothing to stop it, very flat country.

I know a lot of people like to put things on the ground under their greenhouse benches, but... if you put covered plastic tubs full of water under all your benches, there will be a lot more thermal mass and heat storage to keep your greenhouse above freezing much longer in event of power failure.
Since I began storing rain in my sunroom in 32-gallon / 121 liter covered plastic trash barrels, my grow space is much warmer on winter nights and costs much less to heat. These covered barrels are under $15 each at Home Depot.

Well, the rescue was a success! Yes, relationships complicate life, but they are a "mess worth making." 😀
