Orchids with a strong scent

HI i have three goergous orchids i got on valentines day..they came from safeway..My husband gave them to me..they are one fairly large white phal,one quite small yellow red spotted phal,and two purple phals that are fairly large they came in the same pot..All of them are in small plastic see-thru pots a couple in spagnum moss a couple in bark..They are all also placed in larger plastic 8' or10' pots NO DRAINAGE!Before i found this site i read it's best to leave them in the plastic pot..But the pots seemed small so i ordered 5'5'' clear plastic pots from repotme.com.i was planning on removing all of them,placing them in the new larger plastic pots in bark?And placing them back in the decorative pots is that right??I had planned on just removing the plastic's to water them,let them drain put them back in the deco pot?Is that wrong?HELLLLLLLPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just adding to my previous post... though the orchid I talked about is often sold as Brassia Toscanna (or variations), I've now found that it's current correct RHS name is Brassidium Spider Star 'Toscanna'.

It's finished blooming now But looks like it's starting some new growths, so looking forward to spikes on those!

No-one come up with a bread scented orchid yet? *G*

I don't recall if I mentioned this or not, but Restrepia muscifera and Pleurothallis ornata (aka Plths scheidii) smells like raw potatoes.

Maxillaria picta has the potent smell of ambrosia.

Vanda pumila has a distinctly wonderful fragrance I have difficulties describing.

Vanda lilacina smells like perfume.

Masdevallia caudata has a faint aroma that smells kind of like an artificially flavored raspberry drink.

Vanda coerulescens smells like candy with the artificial flavor of grapes.

Stenia vasquezii smells like Juicy Fruit gum.

Dendrobium kingianum smells like ambrosia or honey.

Bulbophyllum odoratissimum is fragrant, but I forgot what it smells like.

Bulb. psychoon smells like dead fish left out under the sun.

Calypso bulbosa var. occidentalis smells faintly of lemon drops.

I, myself, would be interested, if somebody would like to donate a few to my new collection, as I am a newby. I do live in the Ohio Valley so , I don't know what type would work best.

I've got a Colmanara Wildcat, or a NOID that looks like a Wildcat, that has an amazing jasmine scent in the mornings. It really scents the whole room up to midday and in the evenings it smells nothing at all.

My two personal favorites are: encyclia ceratistes, and encyclia cordigera. I try very hard to keep ONLY fragrant orchids! BettyE

I try to collect fragrant plants/orchids too but a few unscented orchids have slipped through....
I love Burr. Nelly Isler 'Swiss Beauty'. It smells like one of my roses.

I have a Miltonia hybrid that is extremely fragrant, like roses throughout the house! Commonly known as Pansy Orchid.

ohmygosh! I recently "discovered" Holcoglossum amesianum! Intoxicating fragrance! I'm not good at likening fragrances to others, but like gardenia maybe? Heady, floral - strong enough to lightly catch it several feet away, but not so strong as to give me a headache

I in fact found this one by it's fragrance - I was looking over orchids at a retail nursery, smelled something fabulous, and was trying to figure out which it was - I could only see mostly Onc intergenerics, none that I thought would have such a fragrance, but checked a few, none the less ... behind some Cyms I saw some blooms that looked rather like small Phal blooms, but not quite like Phals, I looked down to see the plant - and saw - a terete Vanda ? (Honestly, would have never expected this place to have something like that!) I picked it up to look at it better, and realized it was what smelled so wonderful! I hesitated a bit in buying it, as I really had no idea if I could grow it (and the price was more than I really wanted to spend, especially FOR something I was unsure about growing), but the fragrance literally intoxicated me, I guess ;p I found out while paying, that this chain has a life time guarantee on plants! Made me feel much better But, so far (just a couple of months) it's doing fine. When I got home, I was looking up cultural info, and was relieved to find it's cool to warm growing, so at least I don't need to worry that it will be unhappy temperature-wise.
