Now that you've disturbed the roots, you might as well do the full repot. Seems like you should get new media in there now that you think the plant will sulk. You'll simply have to do it again when the plant perks up. Loose moss also holds more water than tightly packed moss.

I get alot of my orchids at Trader Joe's, and they are often so packed tight in the pot with 100% moss I have to break the pot to get the plant out. I did it again today. All my orchids have come back with new growths. And the next repotting won't be as traumatic. I soak in a kelp bath, and then use my fingers and tweezers to get as much as possible out.

Bite the bullet, take your time. In the long run the plant will be better off.

Loose moss has more air flow and dries out more quickly from my experience.

Just an update, my chid hasn't shown any signs of having noticed the disturbance. It is holding its flowers and seems happy. Fingers crossed

I have an Aliceara Pacific Nova that was so root bound when I bought it that I spent an hour or two picking things out of the roots and also did a lot of damage in the process when I became impatient and wanted to be done with it. It bounced back very quickly from the ordeal.

I do agree that the plant has already been disturbed, so it's best to finish the job. Oncidium hybrids, IME, tend to bounce back very quickly from root damage and pretty readily grow new roots. If the plant is otherwise healthy, I wouldn't worry.

I hate disturbing the roots of orchids but, sometimes, you just need to do it. Even if you do not need to do it now, you will eventually. Good luck with whatever you do!
