My Phalaenopsis orchid with terminal spike
Default My Phalaenopsis orchid with terminal spike

Here are my photos taken the day I bought my Phalaenopsis with the terminal spike & a flower spike both in flower. I didn't expect the flowers to last long but I didn't know anything about terminal spikes when I bought it about a month ago. Apologies for the mediocre photos which I only took as a record of the condition. My next post will show photos of how she looks now. Thanks to everyone for all the information posted, which has helped me. Further comments welcome.

Wow. I'd leave the spikes alone if you haven't cut them. Sometimes a plant grows keikis from nodes on the stems. But mostly you're now waiting for a basal keiki. Care for the plant like you would any other healthy Phal.

Phal's spikes should only be cut when dry. Keikis and/or flowers may grow from old spikes.

Thank you. I have already cut one just below where it was flowering but I will leave the terminal spike to see what happens.

Default Photos of Phalaenopsis as she is now

Now I understand more about what's happening, it does look as though there is something going on at the base on both sides. There is one aerial root under the small leaf which doesn't seem to have grown but looks healthy as do the roots in the medium, which seem to be growing. Any suggestions as to future care welcome.

You have a beautiful plant!

The new things emerging at the base are new roots. Aerial roots are common with Phals; just let them wander where they will.

The parent plant can live for several years after a terminal spike; the better the care, the longer it lives. The longer it lives, the better the chance it will make another growth. If the new growth is from the base, it is best simply to leave it alone; the new growth will enlarge and grow, while the growth that had the terminal spike will eventually die. If the new growth is in the form of a keiki (baby plant) on the flower stem, it needs to be of a certain size before being separated. Generally the roots should be at least 3"-5" / 7.5-13cm long before separating. I prefer to leave keikiis on the parent as long as possible before separating, because the larger they are, the easier they are to establish in a new container.

A new vegetative growth looks different from a root right from the beginning. It is greener, more pointed and usually aims upward. A new flower spike can, at first, be mistaken for a vegetative growth, as well, but the difference soon becomes obvious. It is very likely your plant will make another growth from somewhere near the base, but it may take many months - over a year is possible.

The leaf spotting is partially dependent on the light the plant gets. I don't know enough to say whether more or less light promotes the beautiful leaf spotting. Others here can help.

Yes - thank you again. I think the best I can do is to let it do it's own thing and just give it the best conditions I can to produce new growth wherever it wants to.

Yes, do that. Treat it as if there was no terminal spike.
