bil -- Thank you so much for your suggestion! I will pass it along to my husband, to leave the grass as long as he dares, taking into account the principal hazard -- Homeowner Association appearance standards. Ours is a fairly laid-back HOA.

Thanks, I hope it helps. Given that watering is getting harder and harder in some areas of the US, they might be very pleased to put the idea to all their members. After all, a neat, longer lawn that is green looks far nicer than a short one that starts to brown even when constantly watered.
