I think that unless those who studied horticulture or plant biology in college, studied "orchids" as opposed to tomato or corn plants, they got only partial information. In my mind (though it may be wrong) I see this as similar to going to medical school to learn only "males in their prime" medicine, without any differentiation between males, females, old, infants, etc. The case is, also, if you know the Scientific Method, things that were thought true 10 or 20 years ago, might not be true today. And the other natural "rule" you must go by is the "Lucky Sock" rule, which is that one grower may swear by one method, and even have a fixation on it, or a superstition because it works for him. Hence "lucky sock" : the athlete who wears the same socks because somehow, he attributes his win to wearing his "Lucky Socks." Sometimes people have good luck with some method, and they attribute their "win" to that, when it was actually not that at all. Whether the fertilizer goes on first or later is probably not that important because somehow the plant is getting fertilized (if it is).

Plus of course, any advice on here should really have the caveat

"This is what works here for me"

The lucky-sock-rule only works as long as you don't change the place you are living. Or the GH. Or your lover. Or the water source ...

If you want a bit of success independently of socks or cube-of-ice fashions, you should know a little bit about why things work and why other things don't.

Science is just that.

Science is constant exploration and continually asking questions. One experiment or discovery does not close the book on a subject but merely gives a nod to which direction to next pursue. A true scientist never will say that he/she knows everything for they know too well that they do not.

I have grown plants for a very long time and I will never have all of the answers. Plants constantly amaze me and that is why, after all these years, I am still in the hobby. I am constantly learning something new about plants and constantly being fascinated by them. Why would I waste my time on a hobby that was boring?

Growing a diverse group of plants is a great way to be forced to learn about other climates, countries and, in some cases, history (depending on the plant).

When I first began growing orchids, I never realized how diverse they were. I knew about the more common ones but...wow. And, with the other plants, I never cared about their scientific names. It was good enough to know them by their common names. Growing orchids make me pay a little more attention to the scientific names of the other plants that I grow.

What amazes me is all of you seem to have time to fertilize a lot.

Nope. As I fertilise every watering it takes no more time in real terms.

Science is the asking of questions.
Good science is in the questioning of the answers.
