Fertilizer number?
Default Fertilizer number?

So to make things easy I'll use numbers like "1 tbs of 10-10-10 per gallon" is that the same as "2 tbs of 5-5-5 per gallon? I'm trying to figure out how much of this stuff I should use in comparison to the liquid MSU tap water formula. I use 2 tbs per gallon of MSU per instructions. With this stuff I'd have to use 3x the amount to get closer to MSU. Am I understanding correctly?

I don't use either so, go to Ray's and read up. He has handy-dandy calculators, too.

Did you write two tablespoons per gallon? This is for Vandas?

Yes, one part of 10-10-10 will give the same nutrient amounts as two parts of 5-5-5.

I meant generally. To get 6-6-6 if you have 3-3-3 use twice as much.

two tablespoons per gallon?

That's a lot. I use a very weak dose on every watering, which is about 1cc/1.4g Klite in 6.6 litres, not a US gallon.
The stronger mix I use is about 5ccs of 20.20.20 in the same volume.

If you hang vandas bare root, you must be careful that the drying solution doesn't burn their roots. I use the weakest dose on mine.

Yes, to get the same ppm N from a 5-5-5 that you would from a 10-10-10, you'd use 2x the amount.

In this case, being a 3%N formula, you'd need 13/3=4.333x the amount to provide the same nitrogen loading as the MSU.

HOWEVER, if the so-called "MSU" fertilizer you have is a liquid from RepotMe, it is improperly and illegally labeled as being 13-5-15-8Ca-3Mg. That is the formula of the powder they dissolve in water to make the liquid, not the formula of the liquid in the bottle, which it's supposed to be.

If I'm remembering correctly, they dissolve one pound of fertilizer in a gallon of water, so the formula on the label should be more on the lines of 1.4-0.3-1.6-0.86Ca-0.32Mg.

By the way, if you were to actually use the MSU powder at 2 tablespoons per gallon, you'd be applying over 1000 ppm N and would kill your plants. Two tablespoons of that rip-off liquid would be about 110 ppm N.

I asked about Vandas because I've read Martin Motes and heard Robert Fuchs say they use 2 tablespoons/ 30 ml of powder per gallon/ 3.78 liters of Peters 20-20-20 on their Vandas, every 5th watering.

Like I say I prefer weakly fertilising at every watering for a lot of reasons.
Mostly because I hang mine bare root, and in the summer, a stronger solution can burn roots as it evaporates.

The concentration is in percentage which makes everything easier. If you have 5% but want 10%, double the dose for the same amount of water.
If you want half the concentration, dissolve only half of the dose or use the double the water.
