Question Potinara Question?

The orchid to the right is Pot. Exotic Jewel 'Gemini' and the one on the left is Pot. Hawaiian Thrill ‘Paradise’ which I just picked-up yesterday. The Hawaiian Thrill was sold as a cattleya I didn’t know it was a Pot. until I got it home and read the tag more thoroughly… I’m assuming both Pot.s contain cattleya in their hybridizing but I’m surprised that there leaf size could differ so much in my naïve way of thinking I was under the impression that Pot’s were smaller plants? This Hawaiian Thrill’s leaves are almost the size of my palm…

You'll get a better answer soon, but I think the Pots are a common name for a group of certain types of Cat hybrids. I don't grow many hybrids so I may be totally off the mark.

Potinara (Pot.) = [Brassavola x Cattleya x Laelia x Sophronitis]
Pot. Exotic Jewel 'Gemini' = Blc. Haiku Dawn with Slc. Little Precious
I have yet to find the parents of Pot. Hawaiian Thrill ‘Paradise’
Orchids Alive - (Potinara Hawaiian Thrills 'Paradise' Orchid Plant ) describes Pot. Hawaiian Thrill ‘Paradise’ as "full sized Cattleyas with 6 inch blooms. Attractive dark apricot and peach colors make these perfectly shaped, fragrant flowers unique!"

I would treat it as a Cattleya as it's lineage is made up of Cattleya alliance orchids.
Think of all the characteristics a Pot. could take on given it's lineage .. it is not uncommon to have some Pot.s that are large leafed and/or large flowered ..
Not all Pot.s are built the same

If you scroll down a bit you'll see a photo of both blooms

Potinera is a mix of Brassavola x Cattleya x Laelia x Sophronitis. I suspect that which parents were used can have an effect on leaf size as can culture, to a degree.

Registered in 1999 by Kodama and created by Carmela.

Potinara Question?
Default

Good evening:

One quarter of the background of Pot. Exotic Jewel is contributed by Soph. coccinea, a very small species. On the other hand, nearly half of Pot. Hawaiian Thrill is Cattleya dowiana, a much larger species. Though both of these are complex hybrids, the size of the plants making up the species composition makes a big difference in the size of the plants. Enjoy growing both!

My Pot. Hawaiian Thrill 'Paradise' is just opening! I bought it last summer at Lowes in a "torture sleeve". I can't wait to see it!
