While you can divide paphs into individual growths, a "colony" that remains connected via their rhizomes will act as a single being that shares water, nutrients, etc., so will be generally hardier.
Ray, I think Paphs look better as a specimen plant as well. I know Phrags are a little different. I've seen new growths sprouting off all sides and even the middle of those guys, and I know people routinely divide them just to keep them to a manageable size. Are they still considered sympodial? I'm guessing yes, but not sure.
