Help with Vanda

I've had this Vanda for a long time (I know it dowsn't look very good - maybe dead0?but it has never flowered. When we were at the Toronto Orchid show we saw them growing with their roots in the air so thought we would try this and noticed new a new leaf? growing from the roots. is this another plant?
Any help would be appreciated.

Looks like the leaf is surrounded by dead roots? Was this vanda potted in something prior to this photo? The new roots by the main stalk look good tho, nice green tips!

It's not dead yet! You might have a keiki, if it's a growth coming out of the bottom of the plant... You say you've had this one a while? And -then- saw them growing in the baskets at the Toronto Orchid show? Was it the one at the beginning of Feb? I was there too, and bought 2

Um... How were you growing it before? How much water was it getting? If you want to hang it in a basket, you might want to line it with a little bit of moss.... just to keep some moisture in. All 4 of mine are hanging and doing very well, and I live in Milton.

Hmmm.... It also looks like you have roots growing out near the top of the plant. I think you might be able to cut off the bottom, below the roots if it starts to die off. Give it a good soak for a half hour.

Many of the Vandaceous orchids will send out new growths as your is doing at the base. It could eventually be cut off as a new plant, but id wait a while (long while) until everything stabilizes. A hanging wood slat basket would give you a good place to put it your plant now. No medium in the basket is common for vandas. With proper humidity / misting of the roots, they will do OK.

Where do you normally keep the plant? Inside under lights, greenhouse, outside in summer??? Trying to find the missing link on the no bloom issue.

We put this one under light a few months ago, before that it was just in our living room at a window.

That vanda is far from dead Somebody told me that it takes a huge amount of time till those vanda's start spiking again but I have no idea how long. Lets not hope it is a year orso.

Nope Linsoo. I have mine growing in the kitchen with just the sunlight coming in from the west. I have moss in the baskets, because the grower I got them from suggested it, as it gets really dry in the house during winter. I also have a cool mist humidifier going 24/7

I think the vandas will adapt so long as you keep up the humidity. Or at least that's what I'm choosing to believe. I'll be putting them in the backyard once I can see summer coming.

Oh it's no bother at all Sometimes it's really nice to find someone in the same climatic region as you who grows what you grow, and compare notes.... helps the cities are really close too

I water the vandas twice daily. Usually with a spray bottle, but every couple of days, I'll soak them for half an hour or so for one of the waterings. They seem to really like that, if my Lilac Blossom is any indication. The growths that little one is developing are coming along -really- fast. Can't wait till it blooms
