LED Lighting for a Cattleya?
Default LED Lighting for a Cattleya?

Hey everyone. It's been awhile since I posted in here. Since the last time I posted (August 2015), 3 of my orchids have died of black rot. Thank you to everyone who tried to help, but it spread too quickly.

Now I only have one orchid left, but hope to buy a few more. To my question:

I have a Blc. Chia Lin "Shinsu" #1 AM/JOGA. We recently moved into a new house with central air (a lot more air movement than our old house) and a wrap-around covered porch. So, with the wrap-around outdoor porch, we don't get a lot of lighting. The leaves are dark green and the new growths are leaning.

I purchased a fairly inexpensive LED light on Amazon to try to supplement the light my Cattleya receives. The light specs below:

Aokey LED grow light -
Beads Quantity: 18 pcs
LED Color: Red (680nm 12 pcs), Blue(480nm 6 pcs)
Color Temperature: 3400k(red) 2900k(blue)
Power: 10W

Will this light actually work or did I waste $25? I have the orchid in our eastward facing dining-room and leave the light on the highest intensity (red and blue settings both on high) anywhere from 10-14 hours per day. I liked this light mostly because it wasn't ugly, being in our dining-room and all.

Much appreciated!

What's the wattage? I would guess it would be OK for supplemental light, but it would have to be quite close to the plant,

It's 10W. I've got it about a foot from the plant.

I'd recommend half that, at most.

You'd only recommend half? I was thinking it wouldn't be strong enough... As you can tell, I'm pretty clueless.

I meant half the distance, not half the light, and that was at the outside range.

I have 3 panels that are the same as yours except with only red and blue emitters about 2.5' above an aquarium. I did add 2 9W led floods to give a more normal appearance. I've flowered several orchids under the set up including a Brassavola Little Stars and in a very short time a Vanda. The Vanda is about 1' away and the Brassavola was about 2' away. You can definitely grow Cattleya seedlings under it. Just make sure to acclimate them to bright light gradually.
