Dracula pusilla with sunburn or something worse? Male
Default Dracula pusilla with sunburn or something worse?

Hello,

I have a small Dracula pusilla that is showing what I think is sunburn. Any thoughts on what this might be?

I'm still trying to get the hang of this one. I have it getting approximately 1400 fc but I'm thinking that I might be burning it. The plant is in a humid terrarium and I keep the substrate moist. I'm pretty sure that the terrarium gets good air flow and I open it up pretty frequently. I can't tell if this is some kind of fungus issue from high humidity and poor airflow or too much light.

How about temps? My Massdies would get brown spots on the back of the leaves from over heating. I have them a new home in the basement and it's nice and cool down there and they seem to now be happy. I only have a Dracuvallia but it seems to me they like it even cooler than some Massdies.

That's not sunburn. That looks like heat stress from the past. I'd also make sure the roots look ok

I agree with checking the roots. The planting media looks wet from the picture. Poor air circulation could also be at play.

Agree not sunburn. In a terrarium under lights plants getting too much light turn paler green, then light reddish, then dark reddish. Unless you're using very hot lights the leaves don't get big brown areas turning black, like they do if left in the sun outside.

If it is in a terrarium that is kept humid you will need looser substrate that breathes a lot better. Consider mounting the plant.

Thanks all for the replies. The plant is in loose (not packed) moss. I've been keeping it moist but maybe I've been keeping it too wet. The roots I can see look fine and I don't want to take it out of the pot because it has about 5 flower buds developing and growing downwards through the basket cracks. I took it out of the terrarium so that the substrate can get some airflow and also so the plant is not directly under the cfl's. Hopefully this will knock out the problem. Thanks again!
