Default Masdevallia and Gastrochilus leaf issue

About a month ago, I acquired a Gastrochilus calceolaris and a Masdevallia nidifica. I think they are both showing some signs of poor health since coming under my care. I'm hoping that somebody here can give me some guidance.

1) Gastrophilus: Two of the leaves have started yellowing, although there are a few new leaves coming. I am wondering if I might be losing these leaves from poor culture, namely watering. See attached photo. The Gastrochilus grows dangling from a hanging planter in an east-facing window and with temps between 60-70 degrees f. I give it a good dunk in distilled (or rainwater) every 2-3 days. It gets misted most mornings if the roots seem to be drying and most of them are leaning closer to white instead of green.

2) Masdevallia: The M. nidifica grows in a small terrarium under two CFL's (6500 k). It gets misted twice a day and stays moist. The plant receives around 800-1000 footcandles according to my light meter. It keeps putting out new leaves so I think it's ok but some of the leaves are a bit red. I recently noticed that a few of them are blotchy as well. Is it getting too much light? The dark spots were there when I got it.

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

Gastrochilus: What is your relative humidity? If too low, that looks like it might be the problem.

Masdevallia: Yes, the reddish leaves are probably from high light. I don't think it's a problem since there is no leaf burn.

yea, I would agree that its a smidge too bright for the Masdie. Maybe you can lower it, a smidge! No more, or leave until you notice worse symptoms. Sorry I can't help with the Gastrochilus.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I don't know the exact number but I'm certain that the relative humidity is quite low where the Gastrochilus hangs. I have since moved it to my humid terrarium so we will see if the increase in humidity helps it out.

As for the Masdevallia, I double-checked the light and it was getting quite a bit more than I had originally thought, upwards of 1300 fc. I have since moved it down and changed the orientation slightly so that it's now receiving ~700-800 fc.

Thanks again!
