Phalenopsis Orchid Leaves Shrink started water cullture
Hi
I had a lot of root rot. SO I changed to new medium (as per the suggestion given by people in this forum) and the leaves started to shrink but it had 2 roots with black tip so I started water culture today ( 11/26/2016) . I am not sure whether to start water culture because it has 2 roots with black tip. Please advice. I am attaching photos.
Earlier I have saved an Orchid with water culture but it did not have any roots before water culture
Thanks
Kanaka

You don't say where you live, nor what temperatures are like.
Dehydrated Phalaenopsis like this with poor roots can usually be saved. They need to have high humidity, to minimize water loss from the leaves during a time they have few roots to provide water.
They need to be warmer, rather than cooler, because they grow better during warm weather. 85 F is better than 80 F is better than 70 F better than 65 F. (30C 27C 21C 18C)
Treating the roots with a kelp solution would help. I use KelpMax from First Ray's but Ray is in the process of moving, isn't fulfilling orders. You can probably find a kelp product designed for diluting in water and dipping roots at a hydroponics shop.
I haven't tried water culture so I can't speculate. But I have rescued Phals with roots like this using the information I have outlined above.

Thank You for the reply.
I live in Seattle WA. The temperature inside my house is 74 f.
Can you please tell me where do I get kelp mix and how do I use it. I have heard about help max but not sure what other kelp products are available in marked.
And also the root tips are black
Thanks
Kanaka

You can try Neptune's Harvest Kelp formula. It is good but not as good as KelpMax. I find both products better than Superthrive. I ordered directly from the KelpMax website.

Go to a shop that sells hydroponics supplies. They will have kelp products for sale.
