Phal spikes, root or flower stem
Default Phal spikes, root or flower stem

I have several Phals that are suddenly showing new spikes coming out of the main leaf stalk above the potting medium. Is there any way to know at an early stage if these are new roots or new flower spikes? Most of these are above the second leaf, however one of them has two spikes, one above the third leaf and one above the sixth leaf.

Also should I change the watering and fertilizing schedule if this is happening?

This is the time of year when a lot of Phals set spikes, so you may be in luck! When they first appear it can be hard to tell a spike from a root, but roots are round while an initiating spike tends to be pointier. You'll know pretty quickly.

It's my practice to cut back fertilizer once a spike sets on a plant. It's stored everything it needs. I do slightly increase watering, though, just by a very slight amount, and also mist the roots a bit more often. Pretty vague, I know, and you're likely to get different answers. You'll quickly discover what works for you..
