Can these orchids spike twice from the same point?
I have what I think is a den discolor or some hybrid of it. I noticed a nubbin on the bottom of one of a spike currently in bloom. Can these orchids spike from the same place? Not sure what it is...
And Happy (belated) Thanksgiving!

Based on this part of a description of that section (Spatulata) of the genus Dendrobium:
"blooms on 1 to more, long, multiflowered inflorescence arising from the apical nodes of the stem"
It appears that you might get multiple spikes. Whether that nubbin continues to develop into a spike, or a keiki, or not at all, remains to be seen.

It's similar to my denphals, and they multiple spike at the top all the time.
Plus they also come out the sides as well, so a single cane can have half a dozen flower spikes.

Jeff214, would you post some closeup photos of the flowers? Think of us like grandparents who must see those photos.

Nice looking plant and flowers.
Well done.
I have noted that many of my Den.'s from sections Phalaenopsis, Calista and Latouria also bloom several times from the tips of their PBs.
I haven't checked my Spatulatas because they're all mounted high in trees.
I'd have to get an extension ladder out to check them.
On closer inspection, what seems to have actually happened is that, as the PBs near having finished their growth, the elongation of the PBs slows down making it so that the last few nodes are very close together causing it look as if the plant is blooming from the same node at the tip when it reblooms.
My growing experience and all information ever acquired is that every node can only produce 1 inflorescence or 1 keiki at the most. Then, it is done.

Thanks for the info.
I've noticed on my latourias that some times it doesn't spike from the bud on top, but then it spikes next to it at the same node the following year. Perhaps it's something like that.
Thanks for the kind words, but I can't take any credit since I just purchased it! The ceramic pot that it came in is very cold (I assume, due to evaporation) and it's stunted the orchid's growth. I guess I should repot it soon...

Here's a NOID spatulata I picked up today, showing the terminal leaf (for some reason I thought there was a question about the terminus of the pbulbs on these guys) and two spikes. There are swollen nodes above leaves all down the pbulb that could potentially become spikes, though with winter here and this guy in for a shock I doubt it. I've had spatulatas bloom all up and down the pbulb before.
