Leaves appearing on the flower stem of a Phal orchid
I have a friend who has a Phal orchid that after flowering leaves started to grow on the flower stem. She would like to know what to do with it and if and when it could be potted. I have attached an photo of it. Thanks in advance for your comments.
It is called a keiki and can be potted when it has roots 2 inches long. When they are 2 inches I cut the plant off leaving the piece of flower spike still attached for stability.
That one is still too small to survive on its own. Note that a keiki to be ready to be cut can take a long time (months or even years).
Until then, let it be.
I took a keiki from one of my mum's phals and in almost 3 years it grew only one leaf...but it flowered since the first year I pot it.
And today I noticed there's a new spike again.
