Default White patch on cattleya roots among other things.

I've finally found time to repot my first cattleya and I've discovered many things. The strangest thing I found was a white patch on it's older roots. It doesn't seem fuzzy, but paint-like. Is this normal? I think I may also have had a teeny snail as the roots seemed to have been chomped on and I think I may have found it itself. I sprayed it with hydrogen as adviced on some youtube tutorials. Do snails cause new roots to brown?

Yesterday I watered my Mtssr " Kauli's Choice" and I saw a baby centipede. Upon closer inspection, there were LOTS of them! I freaked and took off all the medium, rinsed the plant thoroughly, soaked it in soapy water and re-potted in fresh bark. I sprayed those baby centipedes with bug killer and they didn't die...and I don't think they are bugs anyway. So, I sympathize with your snail. However, my plant has been inside for at least a month with no sign of infestation. And, yes, some of the roots did look a little chewed. However, I have no clue about the white patch. At least I don't have that going wrong.

If they are really centipedes, they don't eat your orchids - they eat the things that eat your orchids. I would be happy to have them.

As for the white patch - saprophytic fungus comes to mind (eats dead organic matter, does not harm living plants) as well as a chunk of perlite stuck on the root, left over from a previous potting episode. The roots on that plant look mostly dead so I would vote for saprophytic fungus.

They were and I wasn't. I cannot tell you how gross that is. AND, where did they come from after a month??????? In my sunroom. Oh, ick.

Don't watch the Night Gallery episode "Fear of Spiders."
