Phalaenopsis care - Orchid Board

2 months ago I aquired a rather sick looking Phalaenopsis aphrodite, I knew nothing about Orchids but I am studying plants at Uni so I know how plants work, I trimmed all the black slimy roots and removed the damaged leaves, and repotted it in a wooden container I made. My logic is the wooden container will simulate a situation in which it would be found in the wild (the crevase of a tree)? I misted twice a day, origionally there were 5 beautiful flowers but I removed them so the plant could put its resources into forming new roots and leaves (there was still a dormant bud on the spike). Watered (drowned) once a week with an organic liquid seaweed mix and 2 months later it looks very healthy with new roots,leaves and the dormant bud has come away and I should have some flowers in a few weeks.

I know nothing about the states, but in New Zealand or Aussie, you can buy this at any garden shop...... I is truely wonderful stuff and works wonders on almost anything.

Nice work! Can you keep your Phal outside in NZ?

MT-Phal it might be 'Seasol', kind of fertiliser/vitamin thing seaweed extract.

You can keep your Orchids outside in the summer, but not during winter..... especially since he lives in Wellington.

The Seaweed fertiliser the we have in NZ is just that.....nothing else. It is a liquid and made from mulched seaweed thats been soaking in water....... Basically.

I have this kind of liquid seaweed:
Maxicrop Liquid Seaweed - Plant It Earth

Analysis: 0.1 - 0.0 - 1.0

It's advertised as being good for seeding/cuttings/rooting, claims to contain "more than 70 minerals, growth hormones, cytokinin, auxins, vitamins, and enzymes".

Anyway, I like it a lot.
