Moving Forward
Any suggestion as to what would be a wise orchid choice for me to look for when obtaining another species?
Next easiest to care for after Phals?

You are going to get a hundred different answers I successfully grow Oncidiums, wilsonara, and evergreen dendrobuims. I have other species but these are the easiest for me to grow with phals. Also, species phals are interesting and precious!

My best luck is with Cattleya hybrids. Oncidiums bloom well for me, but the leaves always end up crappy looking.

It's going to depend on your growing conditions. What temperatures and relative humidity can you provide, summer and winter? How much light can you give?

Personally, I'd consider paphiopedilums. Some of the mottled-leaved types are particularly forgiving of their culture, are quite compact in size (and look pretty nice while not in bloom), and do well along side phals, with slightly higher light levels.

Sixties throughout Winter, 70's in Summer, partial light in the corner of a room with 7 windows.

With your cool to intermediate temps, try Restrepia or even the warmer growing Masdevallias. My place here in NJ gets into the 80's in summer so I simply adjust their placement if it gets too hot. Potting in clay pots and s/m with good air movement will help control temps also. Plants are small and don't take up as much real estate as some phals.
