I have a NOID phal that has a keiki encouraged with keiki paste. It slowly started losing it's leaves and today the last leaf was on the floor. The leaves started out looking splotchy and turned yellow then brown before falling off. It just has the little center which looks and feels limp. It is in s/h and I checked the roots a couple of weeks ago and they look ok. Not great, but not dead.

What can I do to save my keiki? It is not big enough to plant, as it has no roots yet. This is my first keiki and I have to admit to great love for the little thing. I realize mama is surely a goner, but can the keiki survive? Also, if my orchid has a disease or something to cause the problem, is the keiki affected?

As long as the stem is green and there are live roots down below the keiki should survive. Development may be slow since it doesn't have mama's leaves pumping in sugar. It will have to support itself, but it can do that.

If the stem browns or the roots all die the keiki will be completely on its own, and should be detached. Depending on how far along it is at that point, and its will to live, it may survive or it may not. For now, normal good care for the plant. Give it as much time as possible. Be careful not to over-water since it won't need as much without mature leaves.
