Phrag. Bessae repotted into 3 pots OK??? Male
Default Phrag. Bessae repotted into 3 pots OK???

I received a small Phrag. bessae today from Hausermann's that went into S/H. When I un-potted it, I noticed it was actually 3 separate plants. I re-potted each one separately into small 2" S/H pots instead of just one 2" pot like I received it.

Should I have done that? Will I have 3 smaller plants instead of 1 larger one? I just did it today, so could re-pot all together if need be.

Thanks,

Joe

I have often gotten multiple small plant in one pot from various vendors. I think the nurseries do this so the plants can better control the moisture in the pots. Not being versed in S/H I won't venture to say if they will be ok separate or not .

If the 3 growths were not originally joined, I can't think of a reason why you shouldn't be able to pot them separately.

My thoughts exactly. It sounds from your description as though the plants were not attached to one another and were in fact three independent growths. If so, it would not matter to the plant if you potted them separately. Infact, now you can experiment by putting them in different locations and finding their happy place.

They were definitely 3 independents. As far as finding the sweet spot, they all 3 will go into my grow chamber, so they all get the same temp. and humidity, and for the most part the same amount of light. I do have 2 shelves that have independent dimmable lighting.

Thanks for the feedback. I could see no reason not to separate them.

As long as they were independent to begin with or no longer attached if they ever were, potting separately is fine. Sometimes it is easier to manage several young or small plants in a compot, but that is personal choice.

If you were deliberately dividing a larger plant, 2 mature growths and a new growth coming is the smallest division usually recommended.

That really hacks me off when you get two or three small plants instead of one large one.
