What to do with a Miltassia seedling?

Hi everybody,

I went to Bunnings (Australian equivalent to Lowes) today and somehow a Miltassia seedling came home with me. Now, i dont know what to do with it. It is a seedling. What kind of care does it require? Any suggestions?

It looks nice and healthy. I had this hybrid and it is a robust grower. What kind of media is it in? I would want it in some bark with a bit of moss and not to let it totally dry out. Mine was very forgiving. I divided and sold many divisions of it and the divisions always adapted to life on their own and established well. The pot should have good air and drain holes. Medium light. More than Phals but not as bright as Catts. In summer my Oncidium types go outside and hang from various trees and they seem to thrive. Good luck with this one.

Good advice from silken. Treat it like any other Oncidium types you may have, or Phal conditions with a bit more light.

Thanks! It is in 100% spagham moss now. It is a baby so i am not sure what to do with it. It is early spring in Sydney. Temperature is around 15 to 20 Celsius. Can I leave it outdoor with my oncidium now? Do they like to be root bounded like oncidium?

Also how big is the bulb before it flowers?

15 to 20 C should be fine. I keep my Oncidium types in pots that fit the roots. Not too over potted because media stays wet for too long and those fine roots can rot. I would re-pot if and when you see some new roots growing. If the moss looks old and holds moisture for long I would re-pot sooner.

The pseudobulbs were about 3 inches tall but mine was already a blooming plant when I got it. It doesn't grow huge bulbs like some Oncidiums.

They bloom from developing growths. The one developing now might bloom; if not, and you take good care of it, the next growth will probably bloom. They tend to grow constantly during warm weather.

It is common for nurseries to produce young plants in sphagnum. It is quick to repot in, lightweight for shipping, and often gets around "no soil" requirements if plants are imported. That doesn't mean it is the best choice for long term care in most cases. Again, treat it as you would most any other Oncidium type, for potting too. This plant is beyond the stage where it needs to be babied, but give it a gradual transition to outdoor conditions if possible.

Comparing to my oncidium division, this does not have a mother's bulb to lean on. Its biggest bulb is only 1-2cm wide. It is smaller than twinkles.I think my major concern has been resolved. It shall survive under similar care to an oncidium.

I am planning to kick it out of the house in few weeks time (summer in Australia). Not sure if the spagham moss is good outdoor medium though. Any suggestions?

@estacion It is good news to know it grows on new developing growth unlike oncidium.
