Phragmipedium Bucket Hydroponics

Has anyone tried using the 5 gallon bucket hydroponic system for Phragmipediums? I know Semi-hydroponics works well for Phrags, but would really like to try out the full hydroponic method to see how that works. I have all the supplies, the set up was less than $25.

I'm not saying it won't work, but that seems like a lot of space taken up when a simple under-the-pot tray of water might keep the plant happy enough.

Of course, I'm viewing this from the perspective of having limited indoor and outdoor growing space. If you have lots of room, why not try it? Let us know how it works out.

Haha I'm actually in a college dorm... Idk, I just want to try something new, do some experimenting, see if things grow better. Thanks!

There is a member of our OS who grows all of her orchids in full hydroponics...and the results are amazing. She gave a really great talk at our OS about her technique and we probably could have stayed much longer with our questions if we had not been interrupted by a tornado warning. Clearly, from what I have witnessed from the orchids she brings to show off at our meetings, if done correctly, full hydroponics works very well. Good luck!

I grew orchids in my dorm, with an east-facing window on foggy Mount Sutro in San Francisco. I recommend you grow small to miniature plants that are suited exactly to your conditions. Buy a large used aquarium, if you can, to keep humidity up. You can have a lot more of them, and they will do well for you. You will be very much happier, and they will not intefere with your studies, the way dying orchids might. I recall a dying orchid was much more painful than getting dumped.

After you graduate, and are extremely wealthy like all the older posters here, you can indulge in ridiculosity of magisterial proportions, as do all the older posters here.

Hahaha this post made my day! Yes, dying orchids are quite saddening. I have a bunch of minis in a couple of glass aquariums, things like Laelia alaorii orlata, Dendrophylax lindenii seedlings, Aerangis ugandensis and galeandrae, Disa tripetaloides, etc... Just wanted to try something new. I can wait to be one of these older posters some day!!
