Should I unmount this sad phal? Female
Default Should I unmount this sad phal?

I recently got this little phalaenopsis malipoense as a pre-order which I picked up at my local orchid society meeting. The poor little guy came to me all the way from China.

The leaves are very limp, though the roots look good. I know they look kind of dessicated but it appears to me that it's just the shape of the roots.

I've been spraying it multiple times daily but the leaves seem the same.

Should I unmount it and put it in a pot with some water-retentive media until it gets back on its feet, or would that just stress it further? I really don't want to lose this one.

I have some other mounted mini orchids and they seem to do ok in my environment.

all advice appreciated

How long have you had it? When you say you "spray" it - are you 'misting'? Or, watering well with a spray bottle?

I've only had it a few days, so maybe I'm being impatient.

I'm watering it well with a spray bottle.

The old leaves may not stiffen up, you may have to wait for new leaves to see a difference. Sounds like your watering is ok.

It looks dehydrated. It needs some time to regain its strength after the long journey.

Perhaps, cut 5cm off the top of a 2L soft drink bottle then fill up with few inches of water. Let the plant sit on top (if your environment is dry) to create a humid accommodated environment for it.

Good luck with urs!

Overall, the plant looks like it will survive. It might take a while for it to recover from shipping stress.

I submerge my mounted, semi-deciduous phals in a 1/4 strength fertilizer solution for about 30 minutes to let the roots to become very saturated. I do this every 2 days. They all really like this treatment and roots are plump and grows like crazy. It would also help to have good air movement to allow the crown to dry, and high humidity.
