Taking Suggestions for a New Orchid! Male
Default Taking Suggestions for a New Orchid!

Hey everyone!

I'm looking to get a new orchid and am taking suggestions! I figured it might be a fun chance for others to talk about their favorites. I grow most of my plants in a greenhouse shelf that keeps humidity at least above 70%, probably closer to 80 or 90 all the time. Temps are always about 72 F in the house. They received morning sun and bright indirect light throughout the day.

The plants that grow best for me right now are Dendrophylax fawcettii (blooms reliably every year), Cattleya aurantiaca, Brassavola cucullata, Mexipedium xerophyticum (still small, yet to flower but a vigorous grower), Ascocentrum pumilum, Aerangis punctata, and Dendrobium kingianum.

I'm definitely more into species. I like Angraecoids and Cattleyas, as well as leafless and anything unique. Would like something that grows vigorously! Definitely open to terrestrials but only if they're evergreen. Thanks!

If Den kingianum is doing well for you, consider:
Den nobile/nobile hybrids
Den aggregatum, jenkinsii and whatever the 3rd variety is called.
Den speciosum & delicatum

Since you have Asctm miniatum (now Vanda miniata), consider Asctm ampullaceum, curvifolium and christensonianum.

All 3 Rhynchostlis species (gigantea, coelestis & retusa).

For something larger, try Vanda tricolor or coerulea.

In the slipper category, how about Paphiopedilum fairrieanum, insigne, spicerianum or charlesworthii?

Catasetum and habenaria don't fit your evergreen requirement but they would love your growing conditions. And they don't need to be regularly watered/ if at all in Winter.

Did I hear the word angraecoid!?! I would suggest maybe an Aerangis fastuosa or biloba. If you want a larger one then try Angraecum sesquipedale, veitchii, or a medium one like madgalene or didieri (kind of medium). Angraecum leonis is always fun as well. The best part is all of these have awesome fragrance although I haven't grown some, so not all from personal experience.

Any of the maxillarias would do well for you. Max. triloris is awfully pretty, but I love them all, they are so cute the way the blooms peek out from the leaves.

Check out one of the Aeranthes species, there are several which are fairly inexpensive and not too difficult to find. They don't need a lot of light, to grow and bloom, and they seem to be pretty good growers for me. The flower spikes are long and thread-like, and they tend to produce interesting greenish flowers sequentially. And they're Angraecoids, so right up your alley.

Hmm...a few of them come to mind:
I. Sophronitis cernua
II. Cattleya walkeriana
III. Any of the rupicolous Laeliae
IV. Angraecum calceolus
V. Phalaenopsis wilsonii (though you'd need to give this one a bit of shade)

I second the suggestion for an Aeranthes too They bloom well in low light but I think they tolerate higher light as well. Some are fragrant but all of them are very neat looking if you like green flowers. Some look like glass.
