I don't view ants as either necessarily good or necessarily bad until I need to bring a plant indoors.

When you need to move a plant indoors, place the pot into a bucket (while outdoors). Slowly add water to the bucket, eventually water up to the rim of the pot, this will drive any ants up and out of the pot. Leave a stick touching the plant and the ground, the ants will go elsewhere. Or, you can spray the ants once they are out of the pot. If there are just a few ants, a liquid borax-based ant bait can be placed on the top of the pot (I use the Terro brand ant bait).

Whenever I get "happy sap" I wipe it off with a cotton swab because I heard if you get to much and leave it on it can be a harbour for fungi that cause rot
