Very interesting conversation about the word 'extinct' or 'extinction'. These words really drew significant attention according to:

I'll be fine with extinction meaning
: species or type completely wiped out - everywhere - and won't be turning up alive again unless technological intervention is involved - eg. laboratory building work from DNA material or something 'special' like that.
And should be fair to say something like '
as far as is known, species X is extinct'.
And extirpation/extirpated is ok ----- meaning species or type etc died out locally, but known to still be hanging around alive elsewhere.
So - for gouldiana ----- it is a case of extirpation --- and this word combination '
local extinction' needs to be canned/binned.
