There are no rules for clonal names. Any grower can attach a clonal name (so as to recognize a unique trait, better flower, or whatever) to any plant, but it is not registered anywhere - unless the clone later garners an AOS award.

I know growers who attach random clonal names to all their plants. This serves little purpose.

When a serious grower (as Raymond Burr most definitely was) assigns a clonal name, it is an indication that the plant/flower is deserving of special recognition and that it is distinguishable from the general population of these plants.

I have a piece of L gouldiana 'Greta Garbo', and in view of the relative scarcity of L gouldianas in the US, I intend to self-pollinate it this fall.

epiphyte78, when quoting from the publication "Orchids of Mexico" (two or three post back from yours) said "Laelia gouldiana does not form fertile capsules...". Be interesting if you do achieve selfing. Please let us know if you do.

I'll be fine with extinction meaning : species or type completely wiped out - everywhere - and won't be turning up alive again unless technological intervention is involved - eg. laboratory building work from DNA material or something 'special' like that.

And should be fair to say something like 'as far as is known, species X is extinct'.

And extirpation/extirpated is ok ----- meaning species or type etc died out locally, but known to still be hanging around alive elsewhere.

So - for gouldiana ----- it is a case of extirpation --- and this word combination 'local extinction' needs to be canned/binned.
