As this is Andy's, I am sure that Andy or Harry will be willing to make it good. They do care very much about their customers' satisfaction and, usually, the orchids I have received have been in excellent condition. Perhaps they are more knowledgeable about the orchids from South/Central America and not so much with orchids from Madagascar/Africa. They are good people, though, and I do not think what they did was intentional. They may have even been told it was blooming size (maybe these bloom while very young?).
Good luck!

If there wasn't a pic in the ad, I would be very disappointed receiving a plant in that condition at any price unless it was advertised as a rescue, needing TLC, or some such thing. I don't know what that plant sells for so I can't comment on the value. The plant is totally salvageable imo. I screwed up my A. didieri to where it didn't look much better than yours, and a couple months of good care has made it a nice plant again. The seller should offer some consideration.
Edit: I just read the vendor was Andy's. I'm a little light on orchid money this month. I'll bet $100 that they make good on it. Any takers?

What should I even say, though? I want a better looking plant? A refund? Looks like Aerangis ugandensis isn't even up for sale on his site anymore.

I guess that's up to you really, you can ask for one particular one or ask them which they'd prefer if you don't have a preference

I think I'd start with your observations of the plant; namely, that there are a ton of dead roots and that there do not seem to be any actively growing root tips. (Given the info on this species, I would expect that the roots should be in active growth, as it's a varied grower under high humidity in its native habitat); I would likely note that you are unhappy with the size of the plant as well, make the observation that it does not appear to be blooming size. Tell them why you are unhappy with the plant, include a photo and give them some time to respond to you. I can't speak to compensation; as somebody who has grown orchids for a long time and occasionally sells them, I can see both the side of the transaction.
Just my $0.02,
Adam

Who knows? Maybe someone new or unexperienced did the shipping and handling that day. It happens. Just send the pictures and state why you are unhappy. Be nice about it as well. Don't be demanding or arrogant, I doubt you would be as you seem very nice. Let us know the outcome.

Good deal if you can save the plant.
