Too much light?

Hi,

Not sure if I am providing too much light near my windowsill. If you can look at the attached picture and give me your feedback, it would be most appreciated.

The light is on the high end of good. Cattleya hybrids, and most species, bloom better with more light.

The leaf split because the roots couldn't supply the water required for your conditions of light, temperature and relative humidity. This could be because you didn't water enough, or your relative humidity is so much lower than it was at the grower's facility. It is unlikely you rotted the roots with overwatering.

Read the thread about using a skewer to decide when to water. Water most Cattleyas a little after they are dry. When in sheath, water just before going dry.

Thanks for your input. I just got the plant recently so the split was there when I received it. I had the plant by my window and thought the light was stronger than recommended and saw some of the reddish/purpish tinge, so I took the photo and moved it to the shade. I will do as you suggested regarding the skewer

I agree, looks on the high end without actually burning. On a hot day it could tip the scales and burn. They need good light, so could you just put up a sheer curtain or a piece of translucent vinyl on the window?

Most Catts should be pale green, like an apple. It's even better if they get purple spotting or purple areas on new growth.
