When a reasonably healthy plant is ready to grow roots it can be pretty determined about it. Most likely you will see new root growth soon. The piece that broke off won't do anything.

You mean the nubbin that is left over will die? So there are no cases of the root going around the place where it was wounded and push out another root around the same place?

The bit that remains attached to the plant might branch, but you are just as likely to get a complete new root - one or the other or both.

Nearly everyone does stuff like this. I have broken off roots and new growths many times. This last time, it was my Sievekingia. I was trying to make more room for one of the growths by cutting a bit of the pot away and accidentally knocked off the new growth. It has just started a new one. It can be frustrating but, as said, the plant will try again.

Sorry that happened to you too! My heart sank but I'm glad to hear that your plant was able to put out a new root to replace the one that was lost! I appreciate the encouragement Leafmite! I'll have to shake it off and learn from my mistake! It is just so hard sometimes to forgive yourself as it plays over and over again in your head or at least mine lol.

Broken roots are just opportunities for new roots to be born.

The best thing to do to console yourself is to buy a new orchid.
