Default Plastic containers

I like the fact that many of you use the pint or quart plastic takeout containers as planters because you can see the roots. I am in south fla, hot and humid. Does anyone think I can use those down here? I know that if I do, I have to poke several holes in the container. I mostly have catts but I have dendros, phals, and some no IDs.
I guess I got scared away when I read an article that said to use only wooden boxes and unglazed clay or terra cotta.

Thank you all as always!

Jen

I successfully used plastic pots in Hawaii for nearly 10 years. You just have use chunkier media.

I wonder if the person who wrote the article sold "wooden boxes and unglazed clay or terra cotta" pots.

Of course you can use them. You just need to adapt other aspects of culture so the media does not stay too wet too long - holes (bottom for drainage, sides for aeration) - coarser, less water retentive media - less water. You can also increase aeration by inverting a small net pot in the bottom, simulating an air cone pot.

Switching to such containers is a good time to consider semi-hydroponics.

Thank you all. I am going for it. I have a lot of those containers and I am spending money on new containers plus I really want to see the roots.

Hi Subrosa, thank you for the suggestion. I am an experimenter and have not played with semi hydroponics yet, but I intend to. I have to watch some u tube videos so I can see how to do it.
