My Oncidium Bloom Diary
Default My Oncidium Bloom Diary

Last year, I was given an oncidium. I am always fond of oncidium but they are very hard and expensive to get. So I was so happy and excited to acquire one (and for free).

Early this year, I noticed a spike and eventually it turns into flower I dont know what i did right and what i did wrong. I just want to share my experience with everyone and hope I can help and encourage others.

Here is how the story goes.

28 February 2016
Spot the initial spike. I was so excited.

3 March 2016
It grew rapidly during this time.

10 March 2016
It grows nearly 5cm in a week time.

8 April 2016

It bloomed! It bloomed before I went on holiday. I was away for a month.. It only got occasional water sprinkles over the fence by neighbour.

It is still blooming today. About 40% of the flower had wilted but it is still giving out a good show.

It's amusing that they are expensive and hard to get there. Here in Spain they are ten a penny. I expect you have stuff there for sale that I would kill to get. There is no justice....

I have one of those, and it is SUCH a cheerful plant. Those yellow lips are like flakes of sunshine. It always has a place of honour, by the door in the greenhouse, and on the breakfast table on the terrace in the summer. Last winter it spiked, just the one large one, and then after that was over, I got a small surprise spike. Then, once it was finished with that one, I got another small one, immediately followed by a big one again, so I think it appreciates its new pot.
