That my dear Daniel is sphagnum moss
Used by many commerical orchid growers to hold moisture. The drawback to it is that under certain condition, the sphag moss can hold too much moisture causing phalaenopsis roots to rot. I have a few plants growing in it but watch them carefully .. any sign of rot and they are repotted in either orchid bark medium or a mix or coconut husk chips mix or medium. I am sure many others here will tell you of their successes, trials and tribulations with sphagnum moss
thanks for info. i have just purchased 3 more phal today. and there are in this. i have some [c.i.l. orchid mix] but do not now what is the mix in the bag. the root of some phal do not look very good should i re-pot it. or stop watering for a while
If the roots look bad, I would repot immediately. Sphagnum moss can hold water a long time, and root rot can spread quickly. Your plants may loose some buds and blossoms, but it is better than loosing the whole plant. I have had mixed luck with sphagnum moss. If the plants are grown in a dry environment and the moss is packed loosely, it can be OK. I have, however, received mail order plants in what I can only describe as sphagnum bricks, and they don't like that.
What you can do is soak the orchid mix overnight and let it absorb as much water as it can .. and repot it with that moist medium and not water for a while ..
Did you open the bag yet??
Personally I find this stuff junk! I have a 5 liter bag sitting here doing nothing, once I seen what it was
Some chunky junkie bark with some coir and some junkie tiny perlite.
I think you really might be better off buying some schultz, you can find this at walmart.
