Is this new growth on a cattleya going to turn into a flower spike?
This new growth I have on this catt has been growing a lot lately and Im curious to know if its going to bloom or just produce a pseudobulb. I don't know what kind it is or what it looks like, all i know is that its orange (One of those Lowe's orchids from Better Grow). Its around 4 inches in length and has been producing lots and lots of new roots.
So am I finally going to know what it looks like or am I just gonna get a pseudobulb?
It'a leaf. A sheath may emerge from between the two leaves, but only if it is ready to flower. Even if the sheath looks dead, don't cut it off, as there may be a flower developing in there.
What you are seeing there is typical cattleya growth.
A short rhizome extends from the base of an existing growth. It begins to grow upward with a series of leaves. At some point, the growth will change to that of a pseudobulbs, with leaves retained at the top only.
If the plant is mature enough, and has sufficient energy stores, the apex of the pseudobulbs will begin to form flower buds, with-, or without having a surrounding sheath.
