Update:
I purchased the one I forgot.
Whoops.
It's an Angraecum eichlerianum.
Pray for me... and my wallet.

I have been not buying any more plants at the moment but I fear at some point it will be futile. Good luck with your new dig's.

Rationalising orchid purchases?
Sorry, have I misunderstood? You exchanged money for orchids, and now the world is a better place. Why would you need to rationalise that?

They're here!
My order arrived today and I'm excited to test my abilities with warm-hot growing, humidity loving orchids!
They will be acclimating on my heating mat next to the humidifier for a week or two before I try to do anything with em!
Also, anyone have experience transitioning orchids from packed sphagnum moss to something less water retentive or even mounts? Also, growing tips for any of these guys is totally welcome. I'm sailing for uncharted waters (kinda), so... help!

The paraphalaenopsis is one of the best things anyone can buy!
I don't grow it at moment, but it did well for me in Santa monica when I lived there, which is comparable to the bay area, I'd imagine.
I've been buying new stuff every month for months... so I can't give advice about the main thread issue... really trying to stop, but saving species from extinction can become such a passion!

Pft... we need to do all we can to preserve biodiversity in the face of deforestation around the globe! ... with that in mind, I'll be purchasing one or two orchids every month to every other month to fill my new setup and uh... because I'll have real income for the first time!
We're a little cooler here in Berkeley, but I can manage 78 highs on our "normal" days and higher on warmer days. How much light did you give your paraphal? I'm trying to decide whether I should hang it on my top shelf or bottom shelf - my top shelf holds my Renanthera and the bottom my Phal species for reference!

Well, always an apartment dweller and never having enough space... at that place, I had a bathroom with a big window over the shower that faced southwest, so I literally had a bunch of orchids hanging over the shower that would get watered every time I showered (can't believe I'm talking about this in public), had a rhynchostylis gigantea growing with it and flowered couple times a year, if that tells you how bright it was... actually I thought it wouldn't be bright enough for the rhynch, but turned out to be... but I should add I grew both under lights as seedlings in years prior when I lived in nyc...
what renanthera do you have? I know some of those can handle cold not too bad at all...

I have a R. monachica, the internet says part shade, but I give it as much sun and heat as I can get and it's happy. Temps run 60min all year round except for a few nights in the deep winter!

I usually trade the ones I don't like away. I don't like the hassle of shipping and whatnot! I guess I'm just lazy...

Well, I do like to get my arrivals repotted asap. Sometimes, it was unnecessary, others I figured it saved the plant.
I just don't like moss as a medium, except on mounts, or in 3 or 4 small wads around the edge of the pot with the rest filled with fine bark.
I have to admit I have gone into mounts in a big way this year. It started small, just a couple, and then I realised two things.
1. They look great on mounts.
2. and pay attention to this, If an orchid is elevated to a mount, you now have space on the bench for another orchid!
OK, so they need watering twice a day here... Meh, I figure that each mount takes less than 30 seconds to water if you can water freely in situ.
Plus they look GREAT, and I can now buy more orchids. Did I mention that?
